If anyone says they were not impacted by 2020, they’re lying.
We watched a deadly pandemic take over the world and the issues of racism force its way into the forefront. Whether you took a big hit last year or not, in some way, your life changed.
Because of these issues, many people saw the importance of caring for their mental health and making extra space and time to restore their sanity. But truly learning to cope with life’s curveballs goes deeper than a simple self-care session or reading a self-help book. It’s necessary to connect to your Creator, and there are several ways you can do that in 2021.
1. Make a commitment to work toward building your bond with your Creator
Anything in life starts with the first step. In this journey toward your Creator, the first step could be actually making a commitment to take the journey. This path is a lifelong one, and it begins with you deciding to dive into it head on, step by step, day by day. It takes patience and practice, but it’s something that brings you fulfillment in every aspect of your life.
2. Define what a relationship with your Creator looks like to you
Everyone’s relationship with their Creator is different and unique to them. Some people sing their prayers, while others write letters to God. What does it look like for you? Is there a special prayer you like to say, or a specific scripture that speaks to you? Depending on your background and life experience, there are different ways that you’re touched by your Creator. Pay attention to those things, and it can help you to define what that relationship is like for you.
3. Learn to trust your Creator
When misfortunes come up in life, it’s natural to wonder whether or not everything will be okay. Things like losing a primary source of income or a loved one can be traumatizing, especially in such a time of uncertainty. But the closer you get to God, the more you believe that everything will in fact be okay. As you watch God handle situations in your life, you start to realize that He’s always handled things and will always handle things. And even though it may not look the way you want it to, you develop stronger faith that what He brings into your life is for the ultimate good.
4. Surround yourself with people who are on a similar journey as you
When you’re not around people who are doing the same things as you, it can be difficult to be focused or keep going. Find like-minded people who are also striving to improve their relationship with their Creator. It could be through church, a mosque, a meditation circle or scriptural study.
5. Don’t give up and don’t lose hope
The hardships of life can sometimes make us believe that God isn’t listening or that God doesn’t care. Going back to the second point, you have to learn to trust Him. It’s not easy when things are hitting the fan and it looks like there’s no way out, or when your heart is broken and you’re feeling a lot of pain. But those are the moments where faith and love grow the most. If you stick it out and seek God in those moments, you’ll begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
6. Pick up God’s word
You build stronger bonds with people by speaking and listening to them. It’s the same thing with your Creator. Pick up the Bible, Holy Quran, or listen to His Word. That’s like getting to know Him and understanding what He wants for you and your life. It’s learning what He likes and doesn’t like. It’s learning all about Him. And that can be a building block towards building a stronger bond.
7. Believe that your Creator wants to build a relationship with you, too
Lastly, don’t get caught up in the idea that you’re on your own in this. Your Creator brought you into existence. Any good father wants to be close to his child. If you think you’ve been far from God, examine your life and point out the various ways in which He’s tried to call you back. Pinpoint all the blessings He’s given to you. He’s right there and has always been right there with you. It’s just up to you to finally pay attention.
Help 2021 to be an amazing year, no matter what happens, by building a strong relationship with your Creator.
