2020 has been a very tense year. It has been a time of trial, death and social unrest. Some of us may find ourselves burdened with constant negative energy. Being overburdened and walking with negative energy 24/7 causes an imbalance in your life. Here are some ways you can release some of that negative energy in order to be more at peace, even as negative circumstances swirl around us.

1. Do something creative.
Harnessing your creative power is a great way to release negative energy. When I feel myself burdened down by something, I write poetry. Poetry gives me an outlet to release all of the tension and emotion I feel about something. Some people journal. Journaling allows you to get your thoughts out, make sense of them and cleanse them. If writing isn’t your thing, you could try drawing, painting, dancing or music. Some people even find that cleaning or building is therapeutic.
2. Let it out… literally.
Sometimes we tend to hold in our emotions. We don’t allow ourselves the freedom to just let it out. Instead, we let it weigh us down. But it’s ok to scream. It’s ok to cry. We are allowed to be vulnerable, and vulnerability does not make you weak. Letting it out is a healthier way to deal with negative emotions than bottling it up.

3. Laugh.
I’m sure we’ve all heard the saying that “laughter is the best medicine.” Sometimes all we really need is a good laugh. Laughing and smiling are huge stress relievers. Two things cannot occupy the same space at the same time. How can negative energy and laughter exist in the same vessel? Humor lightens the heavy load life places on our shoulders.
4. Bask in nature.
Personally, I can’t be in a bad mood when I’m surrounded by the serenity of nature. Sometimes we truly don’t learn to “stop and smell the roses.” Some of that buildup of negative energy can come from the hustle and bustle of life. With being sheltered-in-place, we might still be pent up indoors. Simply slowing down and going outside to look at the sky, the clouds, the trees and the flowers can do wonders. Many have started gardens during this time. You could even place potted plants around your home and open up the blinds for some natural light. You can’t possibly hold on to negativity when you’re surrounded by light, greenery and growth.

5. Meditation and prayer
Perhaps one of the best ways to release negative energy is by meditating and/or praying. Meditation helps to balance out your emotions for a clear mind. Prayer connects you to whatever Higher Power you believe in. If you believe that God, by whatever name you call Him, is the Author of life, then He becomes a source of strength. Communicating with Him gives you peace of mind. It also causes you to appreciate the smaller things in life and to have gratitude.
